Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does a bundle of shingles cover?
  • Roofs pitched 14-21º = 95mm gauge giving a coverage of 1.73m² per bundle.
  • Roofs pitched 22º+ = 125mm gauge giving a coverage of 2.28m² per bundle.
  • Vertical = 190mm gauge giving a coverage of 3.47m² per bundle.
  • Ridge Cappings = 4.5 lm per bundle.
  • Double Starter Course = 1 bundle per 18 metres.

Q: Do I need to use an underlay?

A: The use of an underlay is not generally recommended in normal conditions for ‘cold roofs’. However if one is to be used the vapour permeable type to BS 747 4016/5250/5534 is recommended. If using shakes on roofs pitched between 20-30 º  an underlay is required to act as a baffle against wind driven snow or any other foreign matter entering the roof space.

Q: How long should a cedar roof last?
A: With a good quality product and correct installation, a cedar roof should last between 20 and 30 years. Keeping the roof clear of debris will add years to its life and serviceability. John Brash treated shingles come with a 40-year timber treatment guarantee against wood rotting fungi and insect attack.

Q: How are cedar roofs maintained?
A: Keep the roof clear of moss and debris build-up. Sweep off accumulations of debris periodically.

Q: Shake or shingle, what is the difference?

A: Shingles and shakes perform the same functions but are manufactured in different ways. A shingle is produced by sawing a block of wood on both sides giving a relatively smooth face and back to the tile. A shake is hand split from a block of cedar along the natural grain of the wood and then re-sawn to produce one smooth surface.

Q: Can I use lead or metal flashings with cedar?
A: It should be noted that where lead or other metal flashings are used care should be taken to avoid contact between the two, a bituminous paint acts as a suitable barrier.

Q: What type of nail will I need?

A: We recommend either a silicon bronze or stainless steel annular ring shank nail. For shingles, 31mm nails should be used and for shakes and ridge cappings 45mm nails.

Q: How do I estimate how many nails I need?
A: As a rule you will require 1kg of nails for every 4 bundles of shingles.

Q: How do I remove a damaged shake/shingle from an existing roof?

A: Pry up the shingle to be removed and the shingle directly above so that the nail shafts and heads can be accessed from underneath, pull out or cut the nails with a hack saw. The shingle can then be pulled and wiggled out.

Q: How do I replace a missing shake/shingle?
A: Slide a shingle fitted into the empty area. Hold the shingle ½ below the final fitting position. Install two of the proper nails at a 45 degree angle at the butt of the covering course. Drive the shingle up the last ½” covering the nail head, using a block of wood against the butt to reduce splitting.
